New features

Support for creating additional specimen classes

New specimen classes can be created using dropdown manager to categorize specimens types.

Reported by: Multiple

  • This is a long-awaited enhancement requested by multiple clients. OpenSpecimen now allows users to create their own specimen classes

  • Typically useful for all biobanks collecting specimens which does not belong to standard specimen classes e.g., plant, microbes, animal specimens

  • Newly created specimen classes function similar to original specimen classes viz. Fluid, Molecular, Cell, Tissue.

  • Newly created specimen classes are supported in data entry, container restrictions, screen configurations using JSON, task manager modules

Kit Management

Reported by: UMCU, QLH

  • OpenSpecimen now supports creating specimen kits without participant information

  • Assign the kit barcodes to visit and specimen labels while collection. This will automatically mark the corresponding kits as utilised under supplies.

  • Support multi-site kits management (create kits in central repository and send it to various collection sites)

  • Export the specimen kits as master specimen template allowing collection sites to fill data in OpenSpecimen importable file

  • Kit shipments to and fro between repository and collection sites

  • Support shipment manifest while sending collected kits to repository

Container Enhancement

  • Container type for dimensionless containers

  • These dimensionless container types can be used when setting up auto-allocation rules in JSON

  • Container type name format is now optional in order to support naming of boxes when creating them via hierarchy or multiple at a time.

  • Suggest available slots to store the boxes in the parent freezers

  • The container site name can be displayed as read-only on the specimen overview page.

Bulk update collection protocols via CSV

Reported by: Multiple

  • OpenSpecimen now allows export/ import of collection protocols using CSV import

  • This is typically useful when users want to make major updates across multiple collection protocols

  • Supported fields for CSV update: CP default fields, Labels formats, print settings, etc.

  • Fields not supported for CSV update: Label format and Print → Miscellaneous settings

  • Support export-import of all events/specimen requirements across protocols from collection protocol list view (useful to update events/SRs across CPs)
