Whenever, specimens are utilized or staff blocks some places but never utilize them, many empty positions are present in the containers. OpenSpecimen supports generating "Defragmentation report" which suggests available positions to consolidate containers.

Once the physical movement of the specimens is completed, the same report can be imported back using the "Specimen" CSV import template as an 'Update' operation.

How to use the defragmentation report?

  1. From overview page of the container (freezer) → Export → Defragment

2. You get a choice: Move all aliquots of a parent in the same box (Y/N)

Note: This process sometimes takes time. You will get an email after the process is completed along with the report to download (ensure email notifications are enabled).

3. Review and update positions as required. The same report can be imported back using the "Specimen" CSV import template as an 'Update' operation. Refer to Create/Update Specimen for more details.
