How does the REDCap plugin interact with the Epic plugin?
Often, customers integrate both REDCap and Epic into a single OpenSpecimen instance. This leads to confusion about which data comes from Epic vs. REDCap and how they work together.
REDCap and Epic integrations in OpenSpecimen are mutually exclusive because of their intended uses and the different ways they handle participant registration.
Baseline Understanding
Unlike Epic, REDCap integration is not system-wide.
It is done on a per-CP basis because each CP has a corresponding REDCap Project.
Not every OpenSpecimen CP will have a corresponding REDCap Project.
In short, you might have some CPs that are non-REDCap, whereas some CPs are linked to REDCap.
How it works by CP type?
Participant registration for REDCap CPs (Automated)
Participants are pulled programmatically from REDCap into OpenSpecimen by the plugin. Because there is no manual registration, the Epic integration is not used.
Participant registration for Non-REDCap CPs (Manual)
OpenSpecimen users will register participants manually in OpenSpecimen. Therefore, the Epic integration is used to look up and pull in patient data.
Summary
When REDCap is used for a CP, Epic is bypassed. If REDCap isn't involved, Epic is used.
