Text messaging
OpenSpecimen allows sending, receiving, and tracking messages using the Text Messaging feature.
OpenSpecimen must have the EDC plugin installed
Use Cases:
Send survey links to participants via text message
Send and receive ad-hoc SMS from participants
Send newsletters to participants
Use ad-hoc text messages to chat with participants for follow-up, clinical trials, and more
To enable messaging in OpenSpecimen, the Super Admin must set up the SMS provider details (e.g., Twilio) to send and receive SMS within OpenSpecimen.
How to configure SMS provider:
Navigate to Extras → Messaging → + New Provider. Configure the following properties and details in the SMS provider settings.

Type | Twilio API — default in the Type dropdown |
Reply Message | Automatic reply sent by OpenSpecimen to texts from participants or users. |
Configuration Properties | Configure the following properties to enable OpenSpecimen to communicate with the SMS provider. Mandatory properties are listed below. |

Once the above settings are done, the user has to update the Messaging Settings in Collection Protocol where the user wants to track messaging activity.
Steps to set up:
Navigates to CP Overview → Settings → Messaging
Select the Sender Group (User group allows sending SMS to the participant) and SMS Provider (Setup above Twilio)
Go to participant overview page → Message Tab
Click on Send SMS — Enter SMS and send
From Messaging Tab, user can
Download sent/received SMS
Send/Receive SMS to the participant
