How is specimen's availability status decided?

In OpenSpecimen, the specimen's availability status is crucial for tracking its use in research or other applications. This status updates automatically based on various factors.

Here’s how the availability status is determined:

  1. Closed: Specimen is disposed

  2. Distributed: Specimen distributed and disposed / checked out.

  3. Reserved: Specimen is reserved for distribution

  4. Pending: Anticipated specimen

  5. Missed Collection: Forgot to collect specimen

  6. Not Collected: Not collected because of anaemia (for drawing blood) or lack of muscles (for extracting tissues)

  7. Available: Collected and none of above.

The availability of a specimen is currently independent of the below fields.

  1. Quantity

  2. Storage location
