Moving child specimens from one parent to another

Use Case: Aliquots were created under an incorrect parent and need to be moved to the correct parent specimen.

  1. Take data backup: Export the aliquots data into a CSV file using the ‘Export’ option

  2. Deletion: Delete the aliquots using CSV or the user interface (you can delete in bulk via UI).

  3. If CP has label formats:

    1. You must remove them before importing, as OpenSpecimen does not allow creating new specimens with labels.

    2. Remove the label formats temporarily and record the formats in a text file.

  4. Update CSV Export: Update the exported file to replace the value in ‘Parent Specimen Label’ with the new parent specimen.

    1. You need to replace/remove the value in the ‘Specimen Requirement Code’ if you are moving a planned specimen

    2. Make sure you delete the old specimens before importing.

  5. It is essential to ensure that the parent and child types are consistent; otherwise, the upload will fail. For instance, if the derivative is classified as ‘Serum,’ the aliquots file must also reflect this type.

  6. Create Aliquots: Import the updated file with the import type as ‘Create’

  7. Put back the aliquot format in the label format settings.
