Introduction

OpenSpecimen supports deep integration with REDCap.

The integration plugin is capable of pulling all the REDCap data into OpenSpecimen - including automatically creating the Forms.

Reasons to integrate:

  1. Eliminates duplicate data entry - saving end-users time and avoid human errors.

  2. Generate integrated Reports and Catalogs across clinical and biospecimen data

Use Cases

  1. Register REDCap Subjects to the linked OpenSpecimen Collection Protocol.

  2. Pull data from REDCap instruments as OpenSpecimen forms.

  3. REDCap Longitudinal studies: Create visits & pull data for REDCap visit-level Instruments as Visit level Forms.

  4. Expose REDCap data in OpenSpecimen Reports and Catalogs

Pre-requisites

Before performing data integration, it is necessary to fulfill these requirements in REDCap:

  1. The API tokens should be generated for the projects which need to be synchronized.

  2. The users to whom the tokens are issued should have the right to download the audit log and invoke the APIs, as shown below in the red box.

note

Once you have access to both the rights, you will see the below values (shown below in the red box) under the ‘Applications’ section.

REDCap Configuration and Mapping

During REDCap configuration, you need to map project instruments from REDCap to OpenSpecimen participants and visits fields. It will help to synchronize the data across two servers.

There are three levels of mapping you can perform while configuring REDCap.

note

The third level of mapping is exclusively for longitudinal studies.

The third level of mapping is exclusively for longitudinal studies.

You can refer to REDCap Configuration page for more detail.

REDCap Synchronization

After completing the mapping for a Collection Protocol, you can proceed to synchronization. The synchronization is performed in two steps:

  1. Synchronization of instruments: It will synchronize all the REDCap instruments with the OpenSpecimen participants and visit fields.

  2. Synchronization of records: It will either fetch all the records or only desired records specified by the user during synchronization.

You can refer to REDCap Synchronization page for more detail.
