The incoming HL7 message contains PV fields such as Gender, Race, Ethnicity, etc, which need to be mapped to the appropriate PV dropdown available in OpenSpecimen. This will help OpenSpecimen to assign correct PV values to the incoming data.

Steps to add mapping for HL7:

One-to-One Mapping:

  1. Go to Homepage → Extra → Dropdown Manager

  2. Select the dropdown of your choice. For example: “Gender”.

  3. Click on the “desired value” for your dropdown. For example, “Female”.

  4. Click on the Edit button → Add hl7 mapping for it as shown below → click on Update.

Many-to-One Mapping:

It is possible to map multiple PVs from the HL7 interface to one PV on OpenSpecimen using caret (^) as the delimiter, as shown below. For example, you want to map multiple gender values received
from the REDCap (F, FE, and Woman) to one corresponding OpenSpecimen PV "Female".

If the desired dropdown value is unavailable, you can create a new dropdown and add a mapping.
